President promulgates law leading to Latvian language switch in schools

President Raimonds Vējonis on April 2 announced he had signed laws approved by Saeima that will see a gradual swicth to Latvian-language teaching in schools that now use other languages for the bulk of their teaching.

The amendments to the Education Law and amendments to the Law on General Education provide for a transition to the acquisition of general secondary education in the state language only, concluding the transitional process in the 2021/2022 academic year.

"Learning at Secondary School level in Latvian will provide equal opportunities for all young people to obtain quality education and build their lives in Latvia in order to study and work here. It will form a more cohesive society and a stronger state," the President said in a press release.

Pupils will still have the opportunity to learn foreign languages and cultural studies about other countries in other languages.

Nevertheless the changes have met with stiff opposition from Russian-speaking schools, with several public demonstrations having taken place over the last year in response to the proposals.
